Nihilistic representation in characters is often like really stereotypical and satire(according to what i've seen in the media so far).
I mean I guess it's somewhat accurate, but I'm tired of having to have to hear the same character say the same line like every time. "Everything is pointless" upon every single positive thing that happens to them.
Well I'm pretty sure that's the normal thought that comes to every nihlists mind but where's the originality, at least? Can we actually put some more depth or at least creativity other than a character repeating "Everything is meaningless" 24/7?
I'm sure that's where Mirage comes in. You get a glimpse of some robo girl being late to class and being rude to you for bumping into her. But instead, she suddenly doesn't care about being bumped. She doesn't even care about going to school. Because then she blurts out "Nothing matters, anyway."
She doesn't just end it off there, she explains why she believes it. And it's not just a simple "everything will die in the end", no she literally adds more existential beliefs and metaphors to it. And it shows the fear she has in the end.
She describes WHY she believes it's the truth- or at least her own truth. Because we will die in the end, nothing else matters. Every single thing that has existed will come to an end, and even if you've created a nice legacy: It'll be forgotten.
She doesn't believe it's delusional, she believes it's the truth because humans cannot comprehend such a concept. They set limits, "hobbies", distractions to keep the brain from their consciousness ability to increase to the point where it drives them insane.
"Intelligence is a flaw" she says, which is why coming to the terms that everything is meaningless is so hard for others because they just don't want to think about it. That people who don't dive into the unexplored ideas and concepts of the brain aren't self aware about themselves, and implies that being self aware is being truthful.
So if nothing matters, there is no reason to do anything
The best part I love about this game is that the main character, you, doesn't just willingly agree into it. They set a counterpoint against it, a contradiction of the belief.
If nothing matters, then we also have no reason NOT do to anything.
By putting such a nice contradiction, at least a glimmer of hope after the gloominess, it really gives a little second guessing to the player who is reading all these ideas.
Mirage says how everything will end, but time won't end. Because time cannot be wasted, the amount of time we put into things will never be erased. Sure it will be forgotten, that doesn't mean it won't be erased. Because it existed, at least once, and nothing will chance that.
Because we don't have a purpose, we arent shackled by expectations or limitations to our own free will. We are able to do anything. Because we don't have a purpose, we make one. Isn't that something to be grateful for? To make a path for YOURSELF?
(i love this game)
