my thoughts on Waco

i watched a documentary on Waco so i'd write what i think of it.

so basically if you don't know Waco was a standoff between the ATF and the branch davidians, the branch davidians were a cult that was living at mt. carmel, they were hoarding unregistered firearms and their leader david koresh was abusing the children there, and so the ATF arrived there with weapons to try and force them to hand over their weapons, the branch davidians refused, and a shootout ensued, killing 6 branch davidians and 4 feds. after that there was a 50 day standoff, the branch davidians refused to leave because they believed God told them to stay there, and they saw the other people that left get sent to prison. because of this the feds played loud noises of things such as animals being killed as a way to force them to leave. they still didn't and so they feds tried to destroy the building with their tanks, they also put tear gas in there. then a fire was started, presumably by the davidians, killing 86 people in total.

i think that the situation would of played a lot better if the ATF never got involved, there would of been a much better way to stop the child abuse going on without killing anyone. when the ATF got involved there was immediately a shootout, and then after that they continuously provoked the davidians until they burned they place down (assuming they did). when there is a groups of crazy cultists who believe that the government is an enemy of God, having the government show up at their doorstep was an awful decision, and then using psychological coercion was also wrong. its like having a seriously deranged person, and instead of trying to help them, you reinforce their belief that the government is evil by using tear gas on them and intentionally killling their members, who were defending their families from the ATF killing people over unregistered weapons.

the branch davidians had the right to possess the weapons they did. the point of owning guns is to prevent government tyranny. how? because if a government wants complete power of a people, an armed citizen poses a threat to that government, because they have the power to revolt. you might say that a man with an AK-47 isn't going to stop a government with tanks and nukes. this is why everyone should own a weapon. and also an armed population can stop a powerful government. the vietnam war was won by people with civilian weapons and traps against the strongest military in the world. and practically every revolution starts with people with civilian weapons. the ATF had no reason to think the branch davidians were going to use those weapons against anyone, and you can't arrest someone over something they haven't done yet. the reason the whole thing happened was because of the unjust firearm laws that were being enforced on them. and yes, children were being abused, but there were other ways to deal with it that doesn't involve killing people, such as CPS.

I don’t know much about waco other than that it was some sort of armed showdown between the authorities and some religious sect. However, I do agree that killing people is never a valid solution to any problem. I certainly agree with you that cps is a more appropriate response to child abuse than sending in guns and tanks. Apart from anything else the bullets and tanks probably killed some of the children that they were supposedly there to help. (When I was trapped in an abusive wilderness program earlier this year I would have been delighted if cps had turned up but I would have felt in real danger if armed men and tanks had appeared with all guns blazing no matter how well intentioned). The use of guns and tanks was unnecessary and monstrously disproportionate no matter what the rights and wrongs of the Davidians having guns and no matter what the rights and wrongs of anything else allegedly going on.

Sorry about what happened to you at that wilderness programme BTW, but yeah, I think both sides were at fault, and i think it's kind of stupid for people to feel the need to pick sides all the time, when the victims were the children who were mistreated by both sides.
