Not intending to do harm does not mean that harm won’t be done. Saying don’t be offended does not mean your actions and words aren’t harmful. Especially when you have to admit right off the bat that it could be a bad take and you may get “canceled”. Because of the Anti-Trans laws that Becky Mayo supports, cisgender women, yes I said CIS, are being attacked. I found it interesting that the only trans people she talked about was women, she never mentions trans men.
If Becky truly does have trans friends after this video, I hope she understands the harm she is subjecting them to when she says “biologically men who have turned into women” I think what she means to say is that she has trans friends that are women, there is literally no need to include the dead gender. There are more than just “male” and “female”, gender varies and there is science behind it, so it is not a matter of opinion. So not only was she transphobic but she completely invalidates Intersex.
Pregnancy and periods aren’t what make someone a woman. In fact, reducing us to organs is quite misogynistic. If a 13 year old with PCOS has to have her ovaries removed will she not grow up to be a woman because she can’t have periods or get pregnant? Should I be mad my aunt for having a hysterectomy and call her a man because she doesn’t have a period? That would be stupid. We are not our organs, they do not define femininity. Being upset that you have a different experience than someone else is not a reason to invalidate gender identity, it’s a personal problem. This narrative is harmful to cis-gender women as well.
Being offended by being called a cis-woman is really a personal problem rooted in transphobia. Being “born a woman” is literally being a cis-gender woman. What is there to be offended by? So I pose the question.. “Who are you really protecting, women/femininity or yourself?”
I did try to confront her firmly but calmly and she did not want to hear about how what she said was and harmful and it should have been done differently. If Becky truly wanted to be educated she could have spoken with individuals, her trans friends for example, instead of posting a harmful video that only further validates violent transphobia that affects not just trans women but cis-gender women as well. Regardless There was a better less click-baity way to handle it. Posting a controversial video, knowingly, is not a way to educate yourself. Becky: omg guys don’t get mad at me for perpetuating harm :((( dude I could not listen to her for more than a minute after she said “I am not a cis woman, I am just a woman” like… she’s clearly uneducated on what the words mean. Idk why she’s speaking on an experience she doesn’t even have. And she started talking about feminism LMAO, if your feminism doesn’t include all women just pack it up.
It was really hard for me to watch the whole video. I did it in pieces to really break it down and even that was hard. Her disregard for critique told me what I needed to know.
