That’s right folks, Goth is heavily influenced by the Queer Community (which has been around since the beginning of time). A lot of the Goth makeup you’ve seen is highly inspired by Drag Queens (and Kings!). However, they both share the same belief: You should be allowed to be yourself, whatever that may look like, and to always question the “norm”. For some history about how Goth got started, the term “Gothic” was first used by Italian writers in the late 15th to early 17th century. It was originally used as a derogatory term and a synonym for “barbaric” (as a goth, I find it fitting to reclaim this word for the anti-conservative values of Goths heh). Later, after the Punk scene started to die out, it led for a rise in a new genre of music, known then as “Post-Punk” (or what we call now “Gothic Rock”). This type of music originated from the song, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, released in 1979 by Bauhaus. Now, anytime someone tells you they’re Goth but don’t listen to the music, are conservative, or don’t support the LGBTQ+ community, you can politely (or not so politely, you do you 😈) correct and teach them!
