Body Shaming Bad People (TW: fatphobia, p*dophilia?)

So today, I was scrolling through Instagram reels as I usually do and I came across a creator who was proud of her weight loss because she could now fit LizLisa clothing (a Japanese clothing brand). And I stupidly decided to look at the comment section.

Instagram comment sections are notoriously mean, full of many of the –isms (i.e. racism) and the –phobias (i.e. homophobia). I've been slowly getting out of the habit of opening the comment section because 1. I like forming my own opinion within my own biases and 2. all the negativity gets to my mental sometimes.

For some more background knowledge, this creator has been involved in a controversy around the fact that she read raunchy manga about teenage MLM relationships. She referred to herself as a fujoshi* multiple times and overall is seen as a person that fetishizes these relationships. This is weird, don’t misunderstand me. I am in no way going to defend her actions in this post. This is strictly about the body shaming issue.

Anyway, I open the comments not expecting to find so much hate. Not to say that alt people aren’t ever rude, but it’s not what I expect usually from the group of people I was presented with. I saw comments such as:

  • girl stop moving my house is shaking”
  • no wonder Japan has so many earthquakes”

  • you made me drop my phone. Too heavy’

  • you still look the same x”

And more.

Someone else in the comment section pointed out how wrong these comments were, and others justified it with “she’s a p*do and fetishizes MLM”. Don’t get me wrong, that’s weird as hell. I am in no way supporting that. I simply wonder what makes body shaming okay when the person falls low on a person’s morality radar. There are many problems with this mindset, one of them being that other people look like her. Yes, everyone is unique in a certain way, but that doesn’t prevent people from having similar body types. Someone may feel less welcome in these spaces because others make comments like this. It’s also problematic because I’m almost certain that these commenters wouldn’t say such things if the creator wasn’t problematic or one of their friends. I’m not someone who will ever say “kill them with kindness”, I want to be a journalist for goodness' sake. But I also won’t go as far as making fun of someone for their weight or looks over something.

Anyway, that’s my piece on that. I tried publishing this blog once and it completely deleted my post. Like...entirely. So, I didn’t make that mistake again and I wrote this in Word first ;-;. I’m also going to try to post a blog entry either every Sunday or every other Sunday. I tried that with my Tumblr account, and I failed, so I'm going to try to redeem myself. So yeah, that’s all from me. Remember to be kind and have an orange week! 🍊

*A fujoshi is a Japanese term for a woman who particularly enjoys MLM media. This could be a fetishization, but some women are casual enjoyers.
