1. Thomas Matthew Crooks made the first assisnation attempt. He was a registered republican. 

2. Ryan Routh made the second attempt. This man once registered as a Democrat,  changed to unaffiliated, then voted for convicted felon and twice-impeached Donald J Trump in 2016.

The only 'they' here were allegedly Trump supporters.
