Its a Pen Not a Torch or a candle

I notice people in the west when they see the Juche Symbol think its a hammer and sickle and a torch. this is incorrect they believe the torch represents some sort of enlightment like some divine intelligence bestowed upon them. this is untrue. ITS A PEN A BRUSH. this is korea in korea they do not use Pens or pencils they use a brush for writing. 

So what does the brush represent? well according to "Understanding the Workers Party of Korea"

1. Symbols of the Workers’ Party of Korea 

The Workers’ Party of Korea has as its symbols an emblem and a flag. The WPK’s emblem has a hammer, a sickle and a writing brush intersecting at the central point. It symbolizes that the WPK is the vanguard detachment of the working masses including workers, farmers and intellectuals that are rallied organizationally and ideologically with their leader at the centre and a revolutionary, mass-based party that struggles to realize the demands and interests of the masses of the people with its roots struck deep among them. Its flag, red in colour, has the WPK’s emblem at its centre. It portrays the revolutionary and mass character, indomitable will and fighting spirit of the WPK which, guided by the great Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism, carries forward the traditions of the Juche revolution in their pure form and struggles to bring to completion the cause of the Juche revolution by firmly rallying all the people around itself and the leader

what is the role of the Intellectuals? Well they were paramount to the successes of the self sufficient county 

"Korea that has no university before liberation has given priority to the training of national technical personnel.

 As a result, it has completely enforced universal 11-year free compulsory education since 1975 and now has 310 universities and colleges and huge army of 2 million intellectuals. 

So, it wonderfully solved the problem of national technical personnel, the difficult problem after the liberation.This became most valuable foundation for further consolidating independent national economy and constantly strengthening its power. To solve this problem finally, it is necessary to intellectualize the whole society.To intellectualize the whole society means to train comprehensively developed people with cultural and technical level tantamount to the level of university graduates.Only then, is it possible to train revolutionarily and comprehensively developed national technical personnel and solve the problem completely."[1]

Intellectuals solve the complex problems a single person cannot do alone in order to maintain a healthy and efficient system of production. the workers and farmers rear them to adulthood and the intellectuals give back that sacrifice by working towards a better society.
