in utero, fetuses don't gain sentience until around 20-25 weeks. There is no conscious experience happening in the mind of a developing human before that point. Most abortions occur at or before the 15 week mark. Those that occur after this point are usually performed because of medical emergency. It's been discovered that fetuses can feel pain and react to stimuli at around week 9-10, but that does not mean what you think it means. Trees, plants and single celled organism can also react to stimuli like pain, technically, but these organisms also don't have minds or process or experience the pain. They can only react to it. The same issue for fetuses. if they react to stimuli before gaining sentience, they don't really experience anything since their minds are not developed enough to bring concious experience of that stimuli.
soooo with this being sai, if a sentient being is not harmed by abortion, I see no reason to be morally outraged by it.We should focus more on the sentient, living mother that is risking her life to carry a child to term. Why should I have more concern for developing fetus rather than the fully sentient, fully conscious human person carrying that fetus?
