The Democrats and Trans Rights

Democrats don't talk about trans issues enough.

Whenever I listen to a Democrat give a speech about LGBTQ+ issues, they always seem to talk about how everybody should be able to love who they love (which I obviously agree with) and marry who they want to (which I also agree with, even though I am against the institution of marriage). However, what I do not see Democrats talk about nearly as much is the fact that trans people, ESPECIALLY trans youth, are in a massive amount of danger right now. I'm glad that Democrats talk about the sexuality side of the LGBTQ+ acronym a lot, but they need to start talking about the gender side of it much more. The fact that they are failing to do this is incredibly alarming and frustrating.

The Democrats should really begin touching on how Republican lawmakers are attempting to ban books about trans issues, strip trans people of the right to medical care, and prevent trans people from using the bathrooms that align with their gender identities in their speeches. They should also be way more vocal about the fact that LITERAL NAZIS have shown up to drag queen story hour events and pride parades to try to intimidate the people participating in these events.

The Democrats really need to move away from the "love is love" rhetoric of the 2010s; They instead need to start embracing all forms of trans positive rhetoric while also being clear that gay marriage is not the end all be all to the struggle for gay rights.

All this being said, I don't expect the Democrats to change their rhetoric any time soon. As anybody who reads my blogs knows, I don't have a very positive opinion of the Democrats (nor do I have a positive opinion of the Republicans). As much as I wish the Democrats would take a more radical, trans and queer liberatory stance on LGBTQ+ issues, I know that at the end of the day they won't. Those of us in the LGBTQ+ community must free ourselves. At the end of the day, we only have each other.

I'll just add, as a trans person living in Florida, the democrats do not care about trans rights, if they did, they would have at least said something about the onslaught of anti-trans/queer laws signed by DeSantis. Biden claimed he was the "most progressive president in history" while I am fearful of transitioning here because they have done nothing to prevent, stop, or at least slow down the amount of these bills being signed nationwide.

Gay rights may have been won, but there is still an obvious hierarchy of acceptability of queer people in the US, and trans people are at the very bottom. These forms of oppression are built into the system, and no electoral party that works within the framework of this institution will fully fix it.

bro thats worse!! if you want things to change you kinda have to go with the path of least resistance to get things going in the right directions! your lack of voting makes it easier for conservative republicans and 'phobes to pass anti trans bills!!

YEP. i live in the uk and it feels the same here - basically all the mainstream parties range from bystander to actively transphobic, with labour [equivalent to democrats] also fully spouting their own transphobia. it fucking sucks :/
