How do the physics of the sonic universe work??

Okay so i just had a realization, there's no way physics-wise for egg-man to run faster than sonic, yet he did that several times, so clearly the physics work differently there compared to real-life, and egg-man is superior in when it comes to running ability (explains the reason he never dies in the series to my knowledge) now i understand that this difference between game and reality obvious but like in a deeper way; how do the physics of the world work? like every playable character is just as fast as sonic in most of the games but it's clear that sonic is supposed to be *the* speed one. does he slow down for his friends? that wouldn't make sense, at least for the early games i think. and if you have seen that old game-theory video about sonic, you would know you cant just stop running like sonic does, that is like sprinting full speed down a steep hill then trying to stop midway; you will keep going. what determines someone's limits? i doubt it has anything to do with muscles like typical running does, sonic's calves would be terrifying if that were true, and egg-man would be just... man. is it rings? is there like, permanent power-ups that happen off-screen? are they born with a limit? if so, can they ever improve, and is it hereditary?? we know that the various forms of sonic make him faster and overall more powerful, but is his "base" form even a base form? was he fast as a kid? i know that he is portrayed as super fast in the movie but who knows if that applies to the canonical timeline. i believe i need to look into the series more.
