I want to kind of deconstruct transmisogyny a little here because it is a discussion that I find that many of us should be actively having. The more misogyny part of transmisogyny is not only built off of a view of women as docile caretakers, but also forcing an idea that an aging woman is not really a woman. When you look at how they have a tendency to lean towards more childish, girlish traits as being a "woman", you realize that the idea of having a very soft un-aged face, a body devoid of hair, etc. is what they consider paramount to femininity. But transmisogyny itself is additionally clearly built off of anti-blackness and colorism, considering the features that are "feminine" to TERFs are not really features on anyone other than white women. Anything that was said to transfems was and still is said to masculinize women of color, especially black women. A lot of fearmongering towards transfems is easily turned onto black and brown women as shown during the Olympics. White TERFs who has often insisted that their ideas were based in racism, immediately turned on Imane Khelif due to her not fitting the standards of femininity. A lot of people within spaces I am in have attempted to tell people that this is just within transmisogyny, considering its blueprints are based in white supremacy no matter how you look at it. However, don't take a person being the unintended target of transmisogyny as a way to center cis people in this narrative. Pointing out the roots of these ideas are not the same as saying that these ideas are simply just their roots. A cis woman still has the mental defense of knowing that those people are wrong for seeing her as trans, but we cannot disregard that transfems are unable to have the same. You must consider that if this happened to a cis woman of color, there are transfems of color that deal with this even more intense mixture of colorism and transmisogyny that have to watch this play out, to know that their safety is not as guaranteed. We should not be centering anyone other than transfems in discussions of transmisogyny, even if this situation showed the absurdity of the concept (08/26/2024). — Mars ᓚᘏᗢ |
