Went ahead and watched Tsai Ming-Liang's Rebels of the Neon Gods in my quest to, I guess, expand my palette for movies. Here are just some thoughts right after watching without going into too much detail.
The main motifs throughout the film mainly have to deal with isolation, usually backdropped with the oppressive malaise of dissatisfaction paired with urban alienation. All of the scenes and characters have this sort languid and real nature about them, like the people and the city have this sort of malaise around them. This effect is less and more present depending on the scenes, distinctly in more private scenes such as when a character leaves a one night stand. The movie also feels a tad bit similar to Chungking Express, in that I get the same sort of watching sad lonely people be sad and lonely due to the isolating aspects of society.
All in all this movie makes me want to watch another Tsai Ming-Liang movie as this one was very good. Also apologies if that felt like a bit of a muddled review lawl
I also recommend you guys check out some Hong Kong second new wave movies, lotsa good stuff
