Why are companies so harsh when it comes to discontinuation of softwares/consoles?

Just as the title suggests, especially this year, a good bit of key early Iconic 2000s'-2010s' consoles have been sunsetting steadily, The Wii u & 3ds losing support in April, Alongside the Xbox 360 online store that will no longer be accepting purchases of online games or DLCS BY JULY 24TH OF THIS YEAR which was the first aspect of liquidation for the 3ds and WII U families. As technology changes, and consoles change, the audience changes also. Servers aren't as active because the original fans grew up! D-: I wish companies were more open to the idea of allowing open source archives of these materials. Heavy around Nintendo and many defunct MMOs games.  It seems really greedy to hoard rights to something you have no intent on using in the future. Another good software example of this could be the 3DS update that was released a few moths ago with the intention of BRICKING modded 3ds devices. (if your console is already modded you're fine! mod before updating!) Nintendo is notorious for being money hungry since they hardly allow third party developers without a hefty fee. But what I fear is that many of these game titles will be lost to time and fade into obscurity if nothing more is done to archive them appropriately.  I'm not saying companies should keep the old up forever, that's just silly. Maybe just a limited use legacy version as memorabilia. I think of it like a proper funeral for defunct things you know?
