The Word “Retard” Can Be Reclaimed

This is probably the only time, at least for a while, that I’ll be serious on this account lol

I keep seeing people saying how “retard” can’t be reclaimed, these people usually being neurotypicals and self-diagnosed individuals by the way, but besides that I’d like to argue why it can and should be reclaimed;

The “f slur”, the one against the lgbtq, is used by people that are gay, or at least just aren’t straight, the reason being is because it shows that they don’t feel shame for what/who they’re attracted to.

“Retard” should also be able to be reclaimed, it shows that we autistics or people with other disabilities are not the “stupid ones”, but instead the ones enforcing the stereotype are the “stupid ones”, they’re the “retarded ones”. Maybe it could be explained better, but what I’m trying to say is that it gives more power to the group, being targeted by the slur, by reclaiming it, if that makes sense. Less power to the slur, less power to the hate. 

I feel that by preventing people from reclaiming it, only keeps that tie with the word. I personally want “stupid” to be more-so associated with the word “retard” than having disabilities being associated with it so I’d even encourage neurotypicals to start using it with that meaning in mind so that maybe we wouldn’t be associated with it anymore and it’d just become another synonym for the word “stupid”. (We being autistics or whatever)
