Why are The Horse Latitudes so low quality?

The Horse Latitudes is a compilation album of The Promise Ring’s old b-sides, but my question is “why are the songs themselves so low quality?” It’s like there’s a low-pass filter on every song that removes the treble from the track. Just listen to The Horse Latitudes version of Saturday or E. Texas Ave v.s. the versions on their individual splits.
