Homophobia in the 1900's

In the 1900's, homophobia flourished as Pride movements started on American soil. In 1905, Sigmund Freud developed a theory on homosexuality that still resides as a stereotype and assumption in the 21st century, which is that homosexuality stems from a lack of a strong father figure in a young boy's childhood. Britannica author Eric Anderson believes that this also created the rise for overtly feminine or masculine activities for youth, so the children would not "become gay" with the strengthened masculinity or femininity that was advertised with these types of activities. With the rise of anti-gay activity, the appearance of the word "homophobia" hadn't even came to be yet. According to Wikipedia; “The word homophobia first appeared in print in an article written for the May 23, 1969, edition of the American pornographic magazine Screw, in which the word was used to refer to heterosexual men's fear that others might think they are gay." During the 1900's, with the start of more in-depth mental health studies, homosexuality was declared a mental illness until its abolition from the scene entirely in 1973.
