Why it doesn’t matter if the Ghost of Kiev is an Urban Legend

MiG-29 Fulcrum The Ghost of Kiev is now generally reputed to be an urban legend regarding a fictional Ukrainian fighter pilot known to operate a MiG-29 Fulcrum that doesn’t actually exist. Here’s why that doesn’t matter. The Ghost of Kiev is not a person to look up to with admiration and respect, but an idea that is meant to represent the spirit of Ukrainian resistance. He stands for the pride that Ukrainians have for their country; he stands for the opposition to Russian occupation in their own territory. And most of all, he stands for the greater sense of values for the culture of the nation as a whole.

This fact itself is what made him valuable as a morale booster, as it served to awaken the greater Ukrainian society’s sense of patriotism for their homeland. Victoriousness in combat thrives on inspiration and hope, as this gives people the assurance that they can succeed in doing what they feel is right. Ukraine needs dedication from the masses and true commitment to realistic goals to win their war with Russia. The Ghost of Kiev may sound like a shameless rip-off of the Angel of Gracemeria from a video game like Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, but if his purpose was to encourage the descendants of the Cossack Hetmanate to fuel the fires of liberation for their own real-life republic so that their country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity will prevail in the end, then he accomplished that goal very well. His work will be remembered for years to come.

Go dance with the angels, Mr. Putin! May the Golden King, Volodymyr the Great, smile down upon the people of Ukraine!

Very well said. People need faith to go through hard times. It doesn't have to be a faith in God or religion, it just has to be a faith in heroism and that it will prevail over the evil. Not all lies are automatically bad - we need lies to go on, else our situation becomes too painful to push through. Kind of the reason so many heroes have been created over the ages

Have you read 1984?

No, but I plan to.

You should. It's about a guy whose job is to make up lies in the style of The Ghost of Kiev.

Hey, ghost of Kyiv is nothing comparable to what's happening in 1984. I didn't think he was real from the start, but who cares about a fictional hero really...
Mr. Ukraine you should definitely read 1984 though, if you haven't already, I 100% recommend.

I would be happy to get a chance to read the story for myself. As far as I understand, George Orwell intended his literature to serve as cautionary tales against authoritarianism. Ironically, many of the same right-leaning people who claim to enjoy his works while professing to be libertarians are themselves guilty of the very authoritarian tendencies that George Orwell warned about.

It does warn about authoritarianism in general, though the regime in the book is more left-wing, that's why right-wingers love to use it so much. Even though Orwell was a social democrat. It's also true that leftists are the ones that censor more today though. Don't know on which side he would be in this day and age.

I remember reading that George Orwell was a democratic socialist who served in the Marxist wing of the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. I think it’s safe to say that he would be pretty far-left-leaning today just as he was back then. His anti-authoritarianism is merely a critique of the Soviet model, not communism as a whole.

You remember correctly, he was a democratic socialist initially, but his views developed. I don't think he'd be right-wing today, I just think that he'd be more pro free speech than most of the left is today. That being said there's not much of a point in that, he just lived in different times.

That makes sense to me. For your information, I’m a progressive, and I want SpaceHey to be a platform that values free speech.
