Believing In Yourself

Believing in myself was always a challenge for me, so I write this blog to remind myself of the obstacles I have overcome, and welcome others to read if you are looking for motivation, or simply want to know how others have come to believe in them selves.

I had absolutely no motivation from friends and family when I was younger. My father simply only cared about how he was going to obtain his next drink, my sister was busy living her life, and my mother was absent for most of my childhood. Thanks to my father.

Believing in myself was simply not a character trait I had, so I always found myself lost and settling for less. However, as I grew I found that settling for less was not going to get myself where I wanted to be in life. That is where my motivation came from. Not from family or friends, but simply from the realization that I wanted a better life for myself, and a better life to give to my children. I've always been one to think futuristically.

The funny thing about believing in yourself, is it doesn't actually happen until you make yourself do things that you are embarrassed to do, because you don't think you will be good at it, or you are afraid it wont be accepted. At least in my experience.

I was tired of making $300 paychecks from working minimum wage at Freddy Frozen Custards and Steak Burgers and knew it would never be enough to live on my own. I knew that I had no education to put on my resume, or any real skills. However, I also knew that I had great potential in a company who would be willing to train me.

So, I put on my resume that I had a GED, and included all my past work experience. I went through interview after interview ACTING like I was fit and had confidence that I could perform these jobs that I knew nothing about. It was the most difficult experience to put myself through. To constantly put on a show of everything that you know you are not, and ACT like you have confidence in what that is.

After about 6-10 interviews, lots of time, gas, and disappointments, I finally was accepted by a job that paid well. That was the moment when I finally believed in myself. If you are wondering how to do something you know nothing about, and don't believe in yourself enough to try it, do it anyways. If you fail, do it again, and again, and again until you succeed. Like others say, you only truly fail if you give up.

So my advise to others is rather you believe you can do it or not, rather you feel you have the confidence about it, DO IT ANYWAYS.
