About the yandere trope

Where did the sudden hatred for the yandere trope came from?

The yandere trope was a normal, even loved, trope in the anime community and fanfic spaces for years but recently I've noticed a 180 on this with people calling the yandere trope "problematic" and a sudden distain towards it. Why do you think the 180 happened?

What are your personal feelings on the trope?

Similar to the other reply, I think it’s a matter of the general view becoming more modern (“those damn woke people ruining everything smh smh”). For example, in western media, teacher-student relationships were not uncommon in older media and were seen as a good thing, if not a little taboo. Obviously, if a teacher were to get with a student nowadays, that teacher would rightfully get charged and jailed. Any media that were to idolize that kind of relationship in current times would also get a lot of flack. People nowadays know that kind of relationship is wrong and are more aware of the power dynamic that exists between a teacher and a student. I think a similar thing is happening to the yandere trope, where there’s a lot more people aware of mental illness and the actions of anyone mentally disturbed, for better or for worse.

It could also be a case of just...the trope getting old. I don’t know much about anime nor anime tropes in general so I don’t know how long the yandere trope has existed for but I’ve heard a lot of (western) people get bored of the typical tsundere trope purely because it’s so cliché.
Speaking of westerners, now I gotta know what’s the NON-western opinion of yanderes...especially in Japan. I know there’s some culture clash between Japanese and western audiences (ex: the unnecessary fanservice mainstream anime is infamous for in the west is actually pretty well-received in Japan, at least from what I’ve heard) so maybe the yandere trope is just dying out for western fans but not Japanese ones...? Idk, food for thought

Oh, and if we’re gonna talk about personal feelings on the trope: I’ll admit it...I actually kind of like it qwq

I KNOW I KNOWWW. HERE ME OUT. I like to think of a trope from a more introspective level, not really in a “god I wish that happened to me” level. Like, why is this character so crazy about their crush that they feel the need to go to such lengths for them? Why do they have no moral compass, anyway? I think a yandere character can be very thought-provoking and an interesting character to analyze depending on if they’re actually written with depths.

Well, let's think about it this way...
We live in a world where people are a lot more aware of the actual abuse going on, however, this has also lead to many things in cartoons and jokes being deemed as problematic and abusive.

For example, we can't make jokes or say we're gonna throw puppies in a river if we're mad. That's just not socially acceptable anymore. Some people think it's even WORSE to say you'll kill puppies than human kids.

That being said, most people think of the yandere trope as "cringe" or "abusive," some people just outright associate the word with Yanderedev (if you know, you know, but he's not someone you want your kid to be around.)

I can see how it might be abusive, considering yanderes can go in so many directions, but most of the depictions are either violent towards their peers, violent towards their senpai, or a mix of both...
Imagine going to a school and you're very aware this one girl has a crush on a specific guy in class. But when another girl starts talking to him, she gets jealous and ends up killing her outside of the school grounds.
The murder part is more unlikely to happen, but having someone obsess over you can be really creepy and is a lot more common than you might think.

Ever heard of the Philmarilion? That's a PDF of 97 pages one person wrote because of their obsession over a 4chan user with a username and trip code (think of it as like Discord's now defunct discriminator numbers.) 97 pages over ONE guy who posted on the sports boards and said racial slurs.
